The beefcake factor in Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, his upcoming male-stripper movie based on the real-life experiences of Channing Tatum, just got a little bit beefier! According to Deadline, Matthew McConaughey, 41, has signed on to play a retired stripper who's now the owner of the club where Magic Mike (played by Tatum) works.
In addition, White Collar's Matt Bomer has joined the cast, which also features Hollywood bad boy Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four). In other words, there'll be pleny of eye candy for the ladies (and gay men)!
If ever there were the perfect meeting of actor and role, McConaughey's casting in this film is it. Known for his roles in A Time to Kill, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Lincoln Lawyer, McConaughey is regularly seen in magazines showing off his buff body, as he runs, swims, bikes, surfs and just plain exists. His penchant for going shirtless is even a running joke between him and buddy Matt Damon, who famously did a spot-on imitation of McConaughey on Late Night with David Letterman.
Magic Mike is based on the real-life experiences of Channing Tatum, who openly admits that he once paid the rent by stripping at an all-male revue back in 1999. When asked about it by Ellen DeGeneres, Tatum replied: "Look, I'm not proud of it, but I'm not ashamed of it."
Apparently, he is excited to relive it, though. "This was a wild and pivotal time in my life and I couldn't be more thrilled to go down the rabbit hole with Steven," Tatum said in a statement when the film was announced.
Soderbergh has said that Magic Mike is going to be "sexy, funny and shocking" -- and, with such a stellar cast of hunky bodies on board, we don't doubt that one bit. As a matter of fact, we can't wait.
