Brett Ratner is going to the Oscars. No, the "Rush Hour" film director hasn't received an early nomination. Instead, Ratner, along with TV producer/director Don Mischer, has been tapped to produce next year's 84th Annual Academy Awards telecast, according to The Associated Press. This will mark the first time that Ratner has been involved with the show. The announcement was made on Thursday by Academy president Tom Sherak.
Ratner described the gig as a "dream come true," adding, "This wasn't even in my dreams, it's so far out. This is something I never could have imagined."
The filmmaker, who directed the Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker "Rush Hour" comedy trilogy as well as 2006's comic book adaptation "X-Men: The Last Stand," doesn't plan to waste any time when it comes to putting together the awards show, which will air live from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on February 26, 2012. "Work begins now," he said. "We're going to hang up the phone and get to work."
Neither Ratner nor Mischer would reveal any of their plans (seeing as how they hadn't even discussed anything yet), but they did say that they want to improve upon last year's ceremony. "Everything is open at this point," Mischer said. "We're just at the starting gate."
The first order of business, however, is to watch tape from past Oscar broadcasts and figure out how to top them. Earlier this year, Anne Hathaway and James Franco co-hosted the annual show. The host for next year's Academy Awards has not yet been announced.
