Crystal Harris Apologizes For Saying Too Much About Hefner
"The Stern interview scared me, he's harsh," the 25-year-old Playmate tweeted on Thursday night. "I was unprepared and blurted out things I shouldn't have said, I'm sorry."
Hefner, 85, accepted Harris' apology for her comments to the shock jock and said to his followers on Twitter, "Crystal apologized for her Howard Stern interview, which I appreciated. It didn't have much to do with reality."
When a follower responded to his tweet, Hef replied, "I think Crystal told Howard Stern what he wanted to hear. That's her MO with most everyone." And he insisted to another follower, "I don't blame Howard. Crystal shouldn't have been booked on the show at this sensitive time."
The Playboy mogul -- whose sexual prowess has been defended defended by other Playboy Playmates -- has said that Harris "lied" about their relationship, but other than that has remained reticent about the sexual details. He even turned down an offer from Howard Stern to come onto the show and tell his side of the story.
Hefner tweeted that he didn't want to "throw her under the bus." A classy move indeed that his former fiancee should take to heart.

'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Stars Give Apes Top Billing
Freida Pinto and James Franco at the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" premiere
Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images
HOLLYWOOD — There is enough intrigue, presumed destruction and primate shenanigans in the trailers for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" to entice more than just the fans of the 1968 original into theaters when the film opens next week. But when MTV News caught up with the principal castmembers at the Hollywood premiere on Thursday, we asked them to sell us on a few more of the film's must-see elements, aside from their furry co-stars. Basically, if people come to see the apes, what will make them stay?
"Wow, James [Franco], Freida [Pinto], Andy [Serkis], everyone else," Tom Felton said, speaking to his co-stars' appeal. "There is a mixture of CGI and special effects that we've never seen onscreen before, along with a strong story and a strong message: Humans can't play God too much. We should not overstep our boundaries when it comes to manipulating Mother Nature."
Pinto countered that it's all about the apes. "I think this is one of few films that really give them a voice as well," she said. "Of course, 'Planet of the Apes' did as well, but 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' gives them a voice in a very revolutionary way."
One of the prominent primate voices heard is that of Caesar, played by seasoned motion-capture performer Andy Serkis, who, according to Franco, is the main reason why the film is any good.
"The apes, I think Andy Serkis and WETA should get top billing," Franco said. "They stole the show; they're incredible."
Actor John Lithgow, who plays the father of Franco's character, was the only one who thought folks will start out loving the apes and leave loving the humans.
"They [will] stay for the people, and the extent to which the apes become people," he said. "It's a story, it's a great story, that's why they stay."
Check out everything we've got on "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

Britney Spears, Taking Back Sunday Video Worlds Collide Thanks To Director
Photo: Warner Bros.
Taking Back Sunday's video for "Faith (When I Let You Down)" is a social commentary about the fleeting nature of Internet fame, as illustrated by a fake cat trying to make it in Hollywood. It also happens to be the latest installment in the kooky videography of music video auteur Chris Marrs Piliero.
"It was an idea that I had floating around in my head, and when I listened to the song ... the meaning of the song clicked in my brain," the director said of the clip, which follows his cheeky video for Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go."
"People just love cat videos," he explained. "And I just thought it would be fun to see what it would like if a cat had the brain to be like, 'Sh--, I'm a big deal.' "
In the video, Taking Back Sunday post a clip of their cat online, and soon "OMG, WTF TBS Cat" goes viral. The cat eventually hops on a bus to L.A. (with a quick nod to Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle"), finds fame, disses the TBS guys, fails to make it as an actor, winds up in porn and eventually can't handle the pressure. Then, of course, TBS Cat heads back home.
Was that cat as difficult in real life as he was in the video?
"I was like halfway into the shoot, and he was throwing out demands," Piliero recalled, laughing. "It got to the point where no one was allowed to make eye contact with him on set. I had to sit him down and have a heart to heart with him."
Along with the GNR homage and a few other pop-culture references, the video includes a cute Easter egg for Britney fans: One of TBS cat's discarded audition scripts is for the fantasy Spears sequel, "Crossroads 2: Cross Harder," which is also on the marquee in "I Wanna Go."
"I made the TBS video right after the Britney video," he said. "I felt like the cat could exist in the same world as the 'I Wanna Go' world, so I thought it would be a fun little Easter egg. Also, [frontman] Adam [Lazzara] from TBS texted me after watching the Britney video, and I didn't even realize that during the paparazzi fight when she swings the mic around — that is something that Adam does all the time, which is something I was very conscious of — but I didn't realize the scene happened in front of a store called Keaton's, and his son is called Keaton!"

Lady Gaga And Bette Midler: A Real Mermaid Weighs In!
Lady Gaga
Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images
Beyoncé declared her love for mermaids during her MTV special "The Year of 4," while Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have all dressed up like the mythical sea creatures onstage or in videos. Madonna has surrounded herself with mermen during a past tour, and mermaids also show up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in several new novels, including a forthcoming book by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida is famous for its mermaid shows, so MTV News decided to go right to the source and get a real-deal mermaid on the phone. It's no surprise that "mermaid" Carli Goodworth told us it's officially the Year of the Mermaid.
"It used to be really popular, like, 60 years ago and everybody was all about mermaids, and now today, it's coming back again," Goodworth told MTV News. "The stars are starting to use it, and the people from outside are loving it, and hopefully it'll draw more people to our attraction as well."
So why are pop stars taking on mermaid alter egos? Goodworth said the public persona of mermaids has shifted from the cute and cuddly Disney version to the more accurate version of mermaids who are mysterious, dangerous and sexy.
And the mermaid trend hasn't been free from controversy: There has already been beef between fans of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, accusing the pop stars of lifting the idea, and then between Lady Gaga and Bette Midler, who did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine decades before Gaga did.
"It's becoming so popular," Goodworth laughed about the mermaid beefs. "I think it's awesome. We're used to the few people around here, because we are known as the mermaid country, and it's neat to see all these other people battling it out to be the only mermaid. It's just different."
Being that Goodworth has performed as a mermaid for quite some time now, she's happy to see other people getting excited about it. "We love mermaids, so it's fun to see other people doing stuff with mermaids besides us," she said, adding her advice: "Be creative, do your own thing, really do your research."

Chris Cornell Filling In For Robert Plant On Led Zeppelin Tour? That's News To Him
Chris Cornell
Photo: MTV News
Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.
Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.
"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."
Cornell's denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. "They did it for fun," Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show "Todd N Tyler Radio Empire." "I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert."
Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London's O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.
According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, " 'We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].' "
"And he can sing the sh-- out of Zeppelin," Snider added. "They're going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK,' and step in."
In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. "We are trying out a couple of singers," he said. "We want to do it. It's sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there."
But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren't interested in finding a Plant clone. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard."
Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn't see it that way.
"It makes me happy that there's this perception that I have a group of fans that I'm now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be," he said. "But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.
"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."

Justin Bieber, Lil Twist Song 'Is Going To Really Do It'
Lil Twist
Photo: MTV News
Late last year, Justin Bieber and his "homey" Lil Twist revealed they were working on a mixtape. Well, fans may soon get to hear a song and see a video from that mixtape.
When MTV News spoke to rapper Twist at 106 & Park's Closer to My Dreams tour stop in Los Angeles on Thursday, he told us that once his new single with Bieber reaches the masses, it would have a good chance at making a play in our race for Summer Jam of 2011.
"My third single, 'Wherever You Are,' " Twist said of his summer jam pick. "It features my little brother Justin Bieber and I believe that that record is going to really do it."
Twist went on to dish about the duo's plans to step up their game for the song's forthcoming video."We're gonna get some treatments [written]," he said. "We're not just gonna pick any treatment because that video could just be out of here. We got a few different ones; I don't mean to name any [directors], but a few different ones. It's going to turn out great."
The collaboration between the two young stars has been long-simmering, with Bieber and Twist teasing a full mixtape. For now, though, fans will have to settle for one track. Last November, Twist explained that Bieber had come up with the idea to work on some music together.
"Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend and after that we got real cool actually," he recalled. "[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the MacBook and everything. And then he was like, 'Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let's go.' We just started then."

'Cowboys & Aliens' Star Olivia Wilde Happy To Revive Westerns
Olivia Wilde in "Cowboys and Aliens"
Photo: Universal Pictures
Olivia Wilde is no stranger to big-budget productions — she did, after all, star in last year's "Tron: Legacy." But the actress is adamant about the fact that her latest blockbuster, this Friday's much-anticipated "Cowboys & Aliens," is not like any other that has come before this summer.
"We are not a sequel, and we are not a superhero movie," Wilde explained to MTV News, undoubtedly referring to the string of well-known franchise movies that have come our way thus far this summer, from sequels to "Harry Potter" and "Transformers" to comic book fare like "Thor" and "Captain America." "So we're an original piece of material and that's really rare this summer."
OK, it's no superhero movie, but "Cowboys" is based on a comic book. Still, Wilde emphasized that the plot isn't exactly derivative. "Even though our title is based on a comic book, we're not actually a comic book movie. The story is completely original," Wilde noted. "Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who wrote 'Star Trek,' wrote this story from scratch, just using the idea of the 'Cowboys & Aliens' comic book as inspiration."
Another way that "Cowboys & Aliens" stands out from the pack is the way it pays homage to a classic genre. "I think we're bringing the Western to a younger audience in a major way, which I think is really exciting, because I love Westerns, and I'm happy to introduce this genre to a bunch of people," Wilde said.
Of course, no good Western is complete without its rugged leading men. "We have Daniel Craig, who I think embodied Steve McQueen in this role," the actress gushed. "He's so badass it's unbelievable, and I think he's really, really smart and interesting in this role, and I think Harrison Ford pulls out his best performance in years. He's incredibly moving, and also very funny."
Check out everything we've got on "Cowboys & Aliens."

First Look: Disney Movie 'Tangled'
Looks like a good movie to take the kids to :)
Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka: Not Tying the Knot!
Rumors of the supposed forthcoming nuptials began swirling after the 38-year-old actor expressed his hope to say "I do" as the marriage equality bill was in the process of being passed.
Despite his previous statement, Neil says he and David aren't ready to tie the knot just yet, telling Bravo's Andy Cohen that the couple currently "have no plans to [wed]."
Further explaining his change in heart, Harris continued, "We have contemplated it here [in New York], but the problem is if you say like yes, we're planning a wedding, then it becomes a big giant thing."

Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant accept the award for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards on Sunday
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
"I'm bewildered," Robert Plant said onstage as he accepted the Grammy Album of the Year award with Alison Krauss on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."
He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect Grammy album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.
You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his Led Zeppelin days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.
Really, she's the key to Sand's success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.
And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.
And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.
To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.
One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.
"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards."

Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File
Dimmu Borgir's Silenoz
Photo: Nuclear Blast
On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.
"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."
Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with
Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.
"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."
Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.
"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."
While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.
"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."
Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.
"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."
The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.
The rest of the week's metal news:
Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...

Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they're calling Times of Grace, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect — we are pushing genre boundaries." 'Amazing Spider-Man' Star Andrew Garfield Says Peter Parker 'Is Everybody'
Andrew Garfield
Photo: MTV News
When "The Amazing Spider-Man" took Comic-Con by storm over the weekend, much of the buzz was about the movie's trailer and our first glimpses of Spidey in action and villain-to-be Curt Connors. But when MTV News sat down with stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, we got a little more touchy-feely and asked for more insight into how they decided to approach their much-beloved characters.
"I've always loved this character, and I've always loved the base essence of this character," he told us on Saturday. "And I feel like this character is everybody. It doesn't belong to me; it doesn't belong to you; it doesn't belong to him, her or he or she."
Garfield said that the nerdy-in-real-life/kick-butt-in-spandex hero has given him "so much reassurance over the years," that the character has incredible importance for him. "There's so many elements that I care about. One of the elements that I was interested in was doing something with his physicality," he continued. "I wanted to be as if the venom from the spider bite was doing something specific to his DNA."
While Spider-man goes through some crazy changes, Peter was easy for Garfield to figure out. "He's everyone. He goes through the same struggles that all teenage boys go through," he said. "It's impossible to not relate to."
Though she's aware Gwen Stacy's history on the page, Stone said a lot of her approach to the character was "instinctual" and based on her reaction to Garfield's Peter.
"I think, from the beginning, the attraction between Gwen and Peter is pretty apparent, and that just kind of intensifies throughout the course of the movie," she said. "Gwen really relates to the story through Peter. And I don't want to give too much away with that, but she's ... sweet."

Michael Jackson's Family Upset With James Durbin Over 'American Idol' Pepsi Quip
James Durbin performs on "American Idol" on Wednesday
Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox
Some people might argue that it's patently unfair to take rank amateurs, put them on the biggest show on TV and then expose them to potential worldwide ridicule every week. Because it's one thing to tune in to "American Idol" from your living room or play shows at the local wings joint, it's another thing entirely when you get up on that stage and open your mouth with tens of millions watching and listening.
James Durbin learned this lesson the hard way this week when he made what he thought was an innocent crack about not setting himself on fire during his pyro-tastic cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" on Wednesday night.
Asked by host Ryan Seacrest if he was worried about dancing around among the flames shooting up from the piano onstage, Durbin joked, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.' "
The seemingly innocent crack was a reference to the 1984 on-set accident in which late pop icon Michael Jackson was badly burned during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial by some wayward pyro effects. The serious burns he suffered in the incident allegedly led to his longtime addiction to pain medication and prescription drugs.
The Jackson family was not amused by the quip and sent a statement to TMZ on Thursday.
"We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death," read the statement. Family patriarch Joseph Jackson also was reportedly miffed that "Idol" producers did not cut the comment from the West Coast feed of the show.
Durbin defended his slip-up in a tweet, which has since been scrubbed from the singer's official "Idol" Twitter feed, that explained, "For anyone talkin ... I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it." He later added, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."
It's worth noting that Pepsi's bitter rival, Coca-Cola, is the main "Idol" sponsor, a fact that Seacrest reminded Durbin of in an awkward moment after the comment on the show.
What did you think of James Durbin's "Pepsi" quip? Tell us in the comments.

Future Is Tagged For MTV Jams' Fab 5
Future
Photo: MTV News
The future is unpredictable, but Nayvadius "Future" Cash is taking all bets. The Atlanta spitter broke out in late 2010, appearing on YC's club hit "Racks" and segueing into rap's collective conscious with his own party starter "Watch This." Known for his repetitive and catchy hooks, plus his melodic bars, Future has earned himself a spot on MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 roster.
Conceived in 2005 on MTV Jams, the Fab 5 is a collection of the year's most outstanding new hip-hop artists who have made a visual impact on the road to releasing their debut albums. Fab 5 alumni include Juelz Santana, Tony Yayo, Paul Wall, Young Jeezy, Kid Cudi, Drake and 2011's first inductee, Big Sean. This year, MTV Jams, MTV News and Sucker Free will bring you 2011's hottest new hip-hop upstarts, and they get no hotter than Future!
"Future is a painter, very creative, very original. I'm a trendsetter. The Future is now," the rapper said. Growing up in Atlanta's Zone 6 section, Future had to look no further than his own family for musical inspiration. As the younger cousin of Organized Noize (Outkast, Goodie Mob) producer Rico Wade, Future soaked up tons of game.
"I got the nickname Future from the Dungeon Family," he said of the collective that is made up of Outkast, Goodie Mob, Organized Noize and others. "My dog G-Rock used to always tell me, 'You're the future, you're the future. You're young, man. Keep dreamin' and settin' new goals and achieving new goals and just reach to the top and stay at the top.' "
Though he hasn't quite reached the heights that he plans to, the 25-year-old is well on his way. The Astronaut Kid, as he calls himself, established his sound on a pair of mixtapes he dubbed 1000 and Dirty Sprite. Since then he has been on a tear. Future is now heralded as Atlanta's biggest young street artist and his latest tape, True Story, reflects his popularity. According to the rapper, all of his material is based on real events that have happened in his life.
"Right now we represent music with substance, music that has meaning behind it. It's just motivational music, everyday life stories and just put it all together on the track," Future said. "I make music from my soul, so it comes across to my fans the same way. So when it touches them, it touches their soul and it comes across right." So far it has!
Check back here every Monday for the next three weeks to find out who will join Big Sean and Future in the Fab 5. And tune in to "RapFix Live," where each artist will be highlighted.

Amy Winehouse Funeral
The ceremony was held at Edgewarebury Cemetery in the Golders Green area of London. And according to Radar Online, Winehouse's parents, Janis and Mitch, her brother Alex and her boyfriend Reg Traviss were among the 150 people in attendance. Also there were pals Kelly Osbourne -- who wore her hair in Winehouse's signature beehive style -- and Mark Ronson, producer of Winehouse's 2006 album Back in Black (and the brother of Samantha Ronson). Winehouse's ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil -- who is currently serving 32 months in jail on a violent crimes charge -- was not allowed out of prison for the funeral.
TMZ reports that Mitch Winehouse delivered a touching eulogy, sharing stories from Amy's childhood and telling his daughter, "Goodnight, my angel. Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much." The 45-minute ceremony, which included prayers in both Hebrew and English, ended with Carole King's "So Far Away," an Amy favorite that she once performed as a duet with her father. "Mitch encouraged everyone to sing to it and they did," a rep for Winehouse told People. "People sang."
Following the ceremony, mourners headed to the Golders Green crematorium, where Winehouse was to be cremated. "I think because her grandmother was cremated at the same place, so it was a family tradition to be cremated," the singer's rep told People. Some of Winehouse's ashes reportedly will be scattered with those of her grandmother Cynthia, who died of lung cancer five years ago.
The funeral may help bring peace to Winehouse's loved ones, but they don't have closure yet. An autopsy on Monday was supposed to determine how Winehouse died, but according to the Associated Press, the results were inconclusive. London police have announced that they are awaiting the results of "further toxicology tests," which will take two to four weeks.
Winehouse's death is widely assumed to be related to her very public struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, but the police have presented no evidence to support that theory. Although U.K. newspaper the Daily Mirror reported that Winehouse's friends and family say she died of alcohol and ecstasy use, an anonymous police source told People that Winehouse was not surrounded by paraphernalia or signs of drugs when she passed away.
For his part, Mitch Winehouse believes his daughter was happy when she died. "Amy was the greatest daughter, family member and friend you could ever have. I will talk a lot about her fantastic recovery," Mitch said in a statement to E!'s Mark Malkin. "Recently Amy found love with Reg. He helped her with her problems and Amy was looking forward to their future together. She was the happiest she has been for years."
What's more, Mitch insists that Amy was on the road to kicking her addictions. "3 years ago, Amy conquered her drug dependency, the doctors said it was impossible but she really did it. She was trying hard to deal with her drinking and had just completed 3 weeks of abstinence," he reveals. "She said, 'Dad I've had enough, I can't stand the look on your and the family's faces anymore.'"
As for the night Amy died, Mitch had this to say: "She was not depressed. She saw Janis and Reg on Friday and was in good spirits. That night, she was in her room, playing drums and singing. As it was late, her security guard said to keep it quiet and she did. He heard her walking around for a while and when he went to check on her in the morning he thought she was asleep. He went back a few hours later, that was when he realized she was not breathing and called for help. But knowing she wasn't depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, it makes us all feel better."
In the statement, Mitch also reveals plans to start the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which he calls "something to help the things she loved -- children, horses, but also to help those struggling with substance abuse. In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two year waiting list for help. With the help of Keith Vaz MP, we are trying to change that."
The singer-songwriter's death has also left questions about her unreleased recordings. Though her musical influence was tremendous, Winehouse only released two studio albums before she passed away. MTV News reports that she had been working on a reported follow-up to 2006's Back in Black for the past two years. It's unknown how many finished songs she actually recorded -- or, indeed, if she recorded any.
Music lovers are now holding their collective breath, hoping that there's another Amy Winehouse album still to come. For now, the world is revisiting her familiar songs: Back in Black is currently No. 1 on the iTunes charts.

'Avengers' Star Clark Gregg Backs Marvel TV Show
Clark Gregg
Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage
Though you might not know him by name, if you've seen many of Marvel's recent superhero flicks, chances are you'll recognize Clark Gregg. The actor plays Agent Coulson in three Marvel movies — "Iron Man," "Iron Man 2" and "Thor" — and will reprise the role in next summer's "The Avengers."
Coulson is one of the few prominent roles in Marvel's expanding cinematic universe that isn't based on a pre-existing comic book character. Appearing first in "Iron Man," Coulson is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, better known by the acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., and has been seen trying to wrangle both Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark as well as Chris Hemsworth's Thor, with a bureaucratic demeanor frequently played for laughs.
In an interview with MTV News, Gregg discussed the future of his silver-screen character in regard to some future television appearances. "It's been revealed today that I'm already doing 'Ultimate [Spider-Man],' " the actor explained, "which is about Spider-Man and a couple other soon-to-be-released Marvel superheroes who are hiding out undercover in a high school in New York, and Agent Coulson is hiding out as their principal, keeping an eye on them and taking things way too seriously."
Even more exciting, however, was the mention of a potential future television show focused on S.H.I.E.L.D., the premiere global peacekeeping force in the Marvel Universe — like an international "X-Files" for superheroes. While a S.H.I.E.L.D. series hasn't been formally announced, the idea clearly appeals to Gregg.
"In a lot of ways, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson really lend themselves to a TV show because it's normal people," Coulson said. "It's real people dealing with extraordinary things."

Lindsay Lohan's Probation Could Be Revoked
Lindsay, who recently completed 35 days under house arrest, was also sentenced to extensive community service, a fine and counseling as punishment for violating her probation. And although the 25-year-old actress claimed to be "enjoying" her time working with homeless women on Skid Row, it turns out that she has done shockingly little so far: just 33 of the 360 hours she's on the hook for serving at the Downtown Women's Shelter. And that's not even counting the 120 hours she's supposed to log mopping floors at the L.A. morgue. And Lohan must complete all of that within one year!
"She can't be nickel and diming these hours," Judge Sautner warned at today's hearing. "Trust me, she is going to get held to that deadline. She is not going to get five more minutes."
Knowing the actress's habit of relying on excuses, the judge added that she would not take exception for Lohan's movie career. "I know there is a movie deal," Judge Sautner continued. "I will not take into consideration, 'Sorry, I'm at the Gotti movie.' I will not do it. She needs to complete the community service within the year."
Lohan's negligence of her community service hours was just one item on Judge Sautner's list of grievances. She also said that the actress hadn't paid her $3,900 in legal fees (although that matter has now reportedly been settled), and that the probation department had been unable to reach her by phone. (Lindsay has apparently been foisting them off onto her poor assistant, then refusing to call them back.) Even worse, Lindsay has apparently not enrolled in the court-mandated Shoplifter Avoidance Class or the required psychological counseling.
But just wait until you hear her excuse! As Lohan's lawyer explained to the exasperated judge, Lindsay was worried that her health insurance wouldn't cover the cost of counseling. (This despite the fact that Lindsay had worn $1,200 Christian Louboutin heels to the hearing.) And no, Judge Sautner didn't buy it, either.
"She needs to get into counseling, and I am going to give her 21 days to get into counseling," said Sautner, who threatened to revoke Lohan's probation and send her back to jail if she has not enrolled by August 11.
And as for that insurance problem? "She needs to find an individual therapist that takes a credit card," suggested Sautner, whom we're now convinced is the real-life version of one of those sassy Law & Order judges.
In Lohan's defense, father Michael Lohan tells Radar Online that he suspects Lindsay is deep in debt -- and he's offered to pay for health insurance costs. Or, you know, he could just auction Lindsay's shoe collection on eBay.

Beyonce Debuts At #1 With 4
Beyoncé
Photo: Ian Gavan/Getty Images
There wasn't much question about whether Beyoncé's fourth solo effort, 4, would debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart this week — it was just a matter of what the final tally would be.
Beyoncé does indeed top the chart with sales of 310,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. But that's about 172,000 less than the first-week tally for her last effort, 2006's double-disc smash, I Am ... Sasha Fierce, and marks the softest opening sales for the singer's solo albums to date (edging out her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously in Love, which moved 317,000).
Bey leads a parade of new faces in the top 10, including the debut from Kanye West protégé Big Sean, Finally Famous: The Album, which lands at #3 (87,000). Also new to the top 10: the latest from Selena Gomez & the Scene, When the Sun Goes Down (#4, 78,000); the second effort from former "American Idol" winner David Cook, This Loud Morning (#7, 46,000); and the debut EP from this year's "Idol" winner, Scotty McCreery, which hits #10 on sales of 40,000.
As for the rest of the top 10, Adele's 21 continues to defy expectations and recent music-industry logic by scooting up one spot to #2 on sales of 92,000 as her year-to-date figures pass the 2.5 million mark. After debuting at #1 last week, Jill Scott falls to #5 with The Light of the Sun, which was down 60 percent on sales of 55,000. Country singer Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party moves up four spots to #6 (48,000), "America's Got Talent"
mini-opera diva Jackie Evancho falls four to #8 with Dream With Me (44,000) and the Eminem and Royce da 5'9" collabo, Hell: The Sequel, slips three spots to #9 (42,000).
While sensitive folkie Bon Iver takes a major 63 percent tumble to #11 (39,000) with his self-titled second album after a #2 debut last week, it is the steady decline of Lady Gaga's Born This Way that continues to make headlines. Even as U.K. breakout star Adele has managed to hover around the top five for most of the year and rack up the biggest figures to date for a 2011 release on the back of just one single ("Rolling in the Deep"), despite a string of singles and high-profile videos, Gaga's album has steadily faded after just six weeks.
This week marks its first outside the top 10, as Born This Way falls another four spots to #12, with sales dipping another 22 percent to 38,000 as total sales passed the 1.5 million mark.
Elsewhere on the charts, the all-star Buddy Holly tribute album, Rave on Buddy Holly, comes in at #15 (28,000), just ahead of the comeback attempt from 1990s nu-metal icons Limp Bizkit, Gold Cobra (#16, 27,000), and the self-titled album from a reunited Taking Back Sunday (#17, 27,000).
Country star Blake Shelton clearly benefited from his turn on the NBC hit reality singing program "The Voice," as his Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton rises 42 spots to #18 as sales ballooned by
182 percent to 25,000. Meanwhile, Maroon 5's latest, Hands All Over, also saw a bump thanks to singer Adam Levine's gig on "Voice," jumping 47 spots to #26 as sales went up 139 percent to 18,000. Judge Christina Aguilera saw a more modest uptick, with her 2008 greatest-hits album, Keeps Gettin' Better, re-entering the charts at #46 on sales of 12,000.
Fans also welcomed back beloved dusty folk singer Gillian Welch, whose first album in eight years, The Harrow & the Harvest, hits #20 (23,000).
Also charting: rapper Curren$y with Weekend at Burnie's (#22, 23,000), "Idol" season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina with her debut EP (#24, 20,000) and third-place finisher Haley Reinhart with hers (#37, 14,000).
Over on the iTunes charts, Beyoncé rules the albums list, followed by Sean, Adele, Gomez, Shelton's greatest hits, Bon Iver, the resurgent Maroon 5, Cook, Eminem and Royce and Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More. In an indication of why her sales might be less than impressive, Bey doesn't have a single song on the iTunes singles chart, which is led by LMFAO's "Party Rock," which beats out Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and "Voice" winner Javier Colon's "Stitch by Stitch."
Adele holds on to the #6 slot with "Rolling in the Deep," with "Voice"
runner-up Dia Frampton just behind with "Inventing Shadows." She is followed by Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight," Lil Wayne's "How to Love" and Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory."
With no major releases hitting stores this week, look for Beyoncé and Adele to duke it out for the top slot in the next cycle.
