Jon Cryer on Charlie Sheen Meltdown: "I Did Not See It Coming"

You might think being called a "troll" by Charlie Sheen would perhaps impact Jon Cryer's fondness for his former Two and a Half Men costar. But Cryer, who's spent nine seasons starring opposite Sheen on the hit CBS sitcom, seems like he's taking it all in stride, as evidenced by his comments in an interview with David Letterman last night. Cryer said of Sheen, "I love him. He's a great friend." Wow -- can't say we saw that coming.
Since Sheen was fired from Two and a Half Men, Cryer has maintained his silence, only appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres show once to make fun of Sheen's "troll" comment, a self-deprecating and humorous move which spoke well of Cryer's professional attitude. Sheen may have been trashing everyone in sight, but Cryer did not go down the retaliation path.
As a matter of fact, as Cryer told Letterman, he has always had a good relationship with Sheen -- and Charlie's breakdown remains "a mystery to me." He elaborates: "I did not see it coming. Nobody saw it coming." Watch Cryer's interview below.

There seemed nothing to do but shut down the show, and Cryer said that a lot of that decision had to do with concern for Sheen's feelings. "None of us wanted to continue with the show if we felt like it was hurting him. And there was a point at which everybody felt like, 'There is no control here.'"
However, Ashton Kutcher was eventually chosen to replace Sheen, a bold move. Cryer seems pleased with the choice, and even Charlie Sheen handled the news graciously. As Cryer told Letterman, "There's a lot of fans of the show, and when we shut down that really hit people hard."
Cryer sounded truly pained when he spoke of Sheen. "We want nothing but the best for him," he told Letterman. "I want him to get healthy, I want him to stay sober, I want him to get reunited with his family."
