Girl-on-Girl 'Glee' Kiss: What's the Big Deal?

It seems a certain scene in this week's "Duets" episode of Glee has caused a bit of controversy. Fellow cheerleaders and glee club members Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) made out (or, as they called it, shared "sweet lady kisses") on the show.
A Fox affiliate in Detroit pondered if Glee is "pushing the boundaries of good taste" and asked if that particular scene (in which the characters use the slang word for a lesbian sexual position called "scissoring" and reference Melissa Etheridge's song "Come to My Window") was "a bit much."
Though viewers don't actually see the two kiss on the lips, the Brittany-Santana scene even caused a stir overseas. The UK's Daily Mail curiously dubbed the moment "X-rated" and wrote that the girls were "seen getting it on."
The Parents Television Council has already expressed their dismay over Brittany and Santana's intimate relationship, which has been alluded to in past episodes. They slammed the "Britney/Brittany" episode where the two girls recreated Britney Spears and Madonna's "Me Against the Music" video for having "plenty of girl-girl bumping and grinding."
But what about the other side of the argument? Ryan Murphy and the show's creators have been praised (and rightly so) for how they've handled issues surrounding homosexuality, particularly with the character Kurt Hummel (played by Chris Colfer). So what makes Brittany and Santana's hook-up any more scandalous than Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn's (Cory Monteith)?
If news had come out earlier that this was going to air (i.e. the Mitchell and Cameron kiss on Modern Family), would it have caused the same stir? Straight couples on Glee have been shown doing far more. The show has always been about accepting people for who they are. Is it possible some viewers completely forgot about that message last night?
Do you think the controversy about the Brittany and Santana makeout session on Glee was overblown? Chime in below!
